SEASON:

Season 1
The Umbrella Academy

Critics Consensus

The Umbrella Academy unfurls an imaginative yarn with furtive emotion and an exceptionally compelling ensemble, but the series' dour sensibility often clashes with its splashy genre trappings.

"The Umbrella Academy" is worth the enrollment. As creator Way once sang, welcome to the black parade.

"Umbrella" looks, feels and sounds different - music does much of the heavy lifting, and effectively so. It's a gorgeous-looking production that evokes another world, with both feet still firmly planted in this one.

It has flaws and excesses, but the series...nonetheless lands in the sweet spot between comedy and drama, and between a plot-and-action-driven narrative and character exploration.

The result is a season of television that seems at once overstuffed and thinned out - long on character and events, but short on any sense of mounting tension, urgency or consequences.

It's never as cutting edge or plainly cool as it so desperately wants to be.

Some choices make the 10-episode first season easy to digest - inviting you to shut off your brain and go along for the ride - but too many fail to live up to the show's creative possibilities.

What takes an inordinately long time to build up to does pay off in a dramatic manner, but not until the last two episodes.

The show focuses on human emotion at the expense of heroics, which sounds like it should be one big let-down, but it isn't.

As superheroes continue their rise in Hollywood, Netflix's The Umbrella Academy gives a decidedly different take on the genre, and it is one which new and old fans alike will be glad to add to their queue.

Overall, The Umbrella Academy may be the latest in a long list of superhero adaptations but its speed and uneven tone are a detriment to its initial promise.

You'll love the fast-paced action, the use of pop music and, most of all, superheroes who aren't shy to use their powers to kick butt.

This show is good. Good character development. scenario and acting. Aidan Gallagher and Robert Sheehan are excellent.

some plot details had the potential to be much better, but I didn't find anything too big to hinder the experience of watching the series. There are funny and original characters, and it's really worth it for those who love a superhero story

Lenta. Nada original y Personajes mal construidos. Esta serie me recordó a la primera temporada de los jóvenes titanes de Netflix. Básicamente la misma trama. Pero con un buen soundtrack y un gran final.

Wonderful, love the characters, think it's better than the first series.

The umbrella academy is in no way "art". In fact, the show is riddled with so many plot holes it could be swiss cheese— take for instance a character who has literal mind control yet never uses it even when people she loves are in danger. HOWEVER, it's not trying to be "Art" or "film" as some pompous dude in college for the film who only watches Tarantino would put it. If you sit back and just distance your belief and understand that it does a beautiful job of emulating the feel that comic books give you, it's actually quite enjoyable and nostalgic. That in and of itself is a form of art, just not the one we are used to in "film"... The characters are complex and interesting. And it is strangely comforting. Except for Luther. The only reason the score here is so low is a. I rate these based on cinema like a pompous film major, and B. Luther needs to get shot.

A fun story with interesting characters. But the emotional baggage gets a bit repetitive and the conflicts are at times so dumb that they feel forced.
