Critic Reviews for I May Destroy You Season 1

All Critics (54) | Top Critics (27)

I May Destroy You, though, is fantastic, in ways that both do and do not have anything to do with its multivalent treatment of rape and trauma.

I May Destroy You is often exhilarating. Its particular freshness makes me feel, sometimes, as I did about Queer As Folk when it came out (more than 20 years ago now).

Jun 10, 2020 | Full Review…

"I May Destroy You" is moving and, despite the subject matter, at times very funny. It should inspire plenty of conversation about very sensitive subject matter with ever-increasing complexities.

Jun 8, 2020 | Rating: A | Full Review…

A writer less volcanically talented than Coel might struggle to weave one of these themes into a 12-part series; that she's able to explore so many different layers of power while creating such a compulsively watchable show is striking.

Jun 8, 2020 | Full Review…

It's tricky to call an actor mesmerizing, for fear of making her power seem magical rather than the result of craft. But Coel here is magnetic and memorable, for sure, and you won't be able to take your eyes off her.

"I May Destroy You" is fascinating TV, taking a dark subject and turning it every which way. It can be shocking, it can be fun (which is also somewhat shocking), it can hurt and maybe even heal. No matter what, it's an unsettling revelation.

Four episodes into the season and it's one of the most powerful depictions of sexual assault I've ever seen.

Jul 2, 2020 | Full Review…

Coel's series is urgent and timely and is perfectly filtered through the hyperfocus of the performative millennial gaze. It is tough to watch, but also funny and touching and beautiful.

Jun 29, 2020 | Full Review…

The series is a tour de force by British actress Michaela Coel.

Jun 26, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

A vital story -- and also somewhat anarchic and scattered -- about how to live with freedom even with the existence of predators. [Full Review in Spanish]

Jun 16, 2020 | Full Review…

It's testimony to the sheer talent of Coel that this is wild and different and interesting. You could watch her doing almost anything, for a start, with her shock of silver-pink hair and that elastic heart-shaped face.

Jun 15, 2020 | Full Review…

Coel has tackled so many subjects around which our generalised prejudices congregate... via the blitherings of mindfulness, the joys of sex and the horrors of sudden distrust, and done it with wit and several nods to the power of friendship.

Clearly well written but what let's it down is that it is trying too hard to be shoreditch contemporary. The scenes of drug taking, period blood clots, threesomes and gay rape make you feel like they have started with a list of modern taboos and have made every attempt to tick them off as quickly as possible. It reduces what could have been a solid drama to shock thrills.

It is a materpeice of unwavering and uncomprimising art! So uncomfortable and neccesary!

Big Michela Coel fan but this show was honestly really bad. Watching her in this it is so clear that she does not smoke or do drugs in real life because the "acting" of it is soooo cringe.

poor acting narrowly made watchable by the writing

What an amazing show... we need more content like this. Michaela is a force to be reckoned with and an amazing actress & creator.

This is very well made. The pilot is a little slow but stick with it and it really sings.

Sexual Assault and Dark Humour do not go together. Simples

half way through and will definitely come back and finish the series. whew. it is needed. it is necessary. it made me squirm and want to turn it off as it triggered memories of my own abuse. this series deals with such heavy, life destroying subject matter yet is so gleeful and full of life. i looove the friendship between Terry and Arabella. It is problematic, rich and true. That scene in episode 1 where Terry puts Arabella to bed and asks "where is your head scarf?" maaaaan. yes, just yes. it's a series that both angers me and draws me in.. just the fact that we are already part of the most vulnerable due to our black skin and we keep putting ourselves in even more vulnerable positions to be preyed upon and taken advantage of. UGH. definitely had flashbacks to my horrible mistakes of old all in the name of but i'm having a good tiiiime. we need to do better in protecting ourselves. and recognizing red flag behaviour and putting a stop to it immediately. the fetishizing of Arabella by the men she meets. gross. the way she just flings herself into bed with them. i just want to scream baby noooo but she's finding herself though. finding her strength. i wish that for every person who sees themselves in this series.
