Movie Info

Acclaimed writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) pays tribute to mystery mastermind Agatha Christie in KNIVES OUT, a fun, modern-day murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death. With an all-star ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell, KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.

  • "Knives Out," in the end, believes earnestly in the whodunit, it just wants to turn it inside out. To say more about that would spoil the fun. But keep an eye here, and elsewhere, on de Armas.

  • Knives Out deserves to be explored as a world of it own, as Johnson balances moral conscience and black humor expertly within the constraints of the murder-mystery genre.

  • There's a great deal of lively and funny shenanigans with poisons and antidotes, and Johnson delivers a stab of cheerful cynicism.

  • An entertainment that's as smart, witty, stylish and exhilarating as any movie lover could wish for.

  • I suspect that Johnson, an adolescent genre enthusiast to his core, has waited since age 10 to make a movie like this. His enjoyment is contagious, even for those of us who don't think Knives Out quite hits its marks.

  • Knives Out is a whole lot of fun, intended to keep the audience off-balance right up until the finish. It's a razor-sharp throwback from writer-director Rian Johnson.

A whole lot of fun with lots of twists and surprises (although the knife motif was a bit overplayed). This film is certainly worth watching.

*Mild spoilers* Turns out that this one reveals its hand too early. That fatally deflates the surprise and suspense for the majority of the runtime. The quest-to-prove-one's-innocence parallel could've been deliciously executed if it weren't played as obviously. I kept waiting for a big twist to flip 'Knives Out' morally on its head, but the characters, while flamboyant, are kept disappointingly one-dimensional. Everyone who is first introduced as good remain good and those presented as rotten remain rotten. I equate this movie to 'La La Land' in the sense that many people gave it credit/longed for it to be something that it wasn't quite - possibly because of its overt political message. The promise of the star-studded ensemble is suggested early on, yet never fulfilled since an unanticipated side character becomes the protagonist. 'Knives Out' plays it straight when I was expecting something much twistier and darker. I had sky-high hopes for this and, while it still passably amuses and showcases some of Johnson's skill, 'Knives' is a much splashier, broader mystery than his bewitching debut, 'Brick'.
